Introduction to ICD-9

This course will introduce the basic principles and conventions of ICD-9-CM coding, illustrate the application of coding principles with examples based on actual case documentation, and teach participants how to analyze clinical data for the purposes of coding for reimbursement. A segment of the program will be dedicated to understanding the changes coming with ICD-10-CM and what is needed in preparation for this transition.

Program Topics include:
  • The purpose and classification of ICD-9 and ICD-10 coding systems
  • Basic characteristics, conventions, symbols, and principles of ICD-9-CM
  • Basic rules for code assignment and sequencing
  • When to use supplemental classifications (V and E codes)
  • The importance of medical necessity
  • ICD-9 and reimbursement
  • Implications of and preparation for ICD-10
Learning Objectives:
  • Acquire/Reinforce knowledge of current, approved ICD-9-CM coding guidelines
  • Know how ICD support appropriate billing & reimbursement
  • Gain understanding of the magnitude of ICD-10 & its impact to individual physician practices
  • Learn how and where to begin ICD-10 assessment for your practice
Who Should Attend:

The course is designed for entry level coders and billers as well as practitioners who wish to strengthen their knowledge of ICD-9-CM coding and familiarize themselves with ICD-10-CM.

  • Basic structure, organization, conventions & symbols used in CPT coding
  • The importance of medical necessity
  • Elemental E/M coding in the office and in the hospital
  • Preventive Services
  • Medicare Screening & Preventive Services
  • Incident to and Shared/Split Services
  • Surgical/Non-surgical modifiers
  • Bundling & globals
  • The surgical package: inclusions and exclusions
Learning Objectives:
  • Acquire/Reinforce knowledge of basic CPT guidelines
  • Understand concepts for coding E/M encounters
  • Identify when and how to use preventive codes
  • Learn the rules and pitfalls of incident to and shared/split services
  • Understand the concepts of bundling & globals for minor and major procedures
